Slow Chemical Midnight Inspired

Slow Chemical’s recent project Midnight Inspired is a nine track trip laced with the sounds of vintage boom bap mirrored with a man asking questions to the frontier. As soon as the project begins with Midnight Inspired, it became clear he was rapping with a mission and that he is not letting his past define him. The second song. “Show Me What You Made Of” might not have the spark of the previous but continues with the album momentum. As we get into the third track, “Black Is Only A Crayon” we get into a song that speaks volumes, especially in this day and age. It talks about whether he sees himself as the black race and that being a color is a state of mind. One of my favorite songs of the album. Streets Of Rage and Wave To You were noteworthy in their own right but I was not impressed by the production of the two. Still Slow Chemical reigns lyrically. The album picks back up by getting into one of the more distinct tracks, “Maybe Baby.” This track has a sound reminiscent of The Native Tongues with hits feel good beat and playful subject matter. Then we get into “False Love” another one of the strongest tracks of this project. This track dives deep into the questions centering about hip-hop. Trying To Be White is probably the unofficial sister track to “Black Is Only A Crayon.” This track goes further into his upbringing in his race. All and all I believe that this project is very solid. Slow Chemical definitely knows and bring forward his message without being overly preachy. Besides a few duds this is highly recommended.
